Research Interests:

Research interests are: applications of AI to bioinformatics (membrane proteins in the proteome); context-aware mobile computing, cross-layer architecture and sub-protocols, wired (ATM) and wireless (WiFi-802.11b,g,e, Bluetooth, ZigBee), QoS, wireless IT security and DoS attacks; video streaming & distribution; applications of AI to robotics; applications of AI to sugar processing; modelling of the hydrodynamical flow in the UK rivers; and computational intelligence (Fuzzy Logic, Neural Networks & Genetic Algorithms).

Consultancy and Research projects:

Research grant and third stream income

  1. I was awarded an Emerald - Standard grant to develop an intelligent graphical user interface software suit that predicts and analyzes membrane protein classifying into Alpha helix and Beta barrel for commercialisation purposes.
  2. I was awarded a grant from the Development Fund to research into the applications of artificial intelligence techniques to membrane protein.
  3. I obtained an Emerald (mini) pre-commercialisation fund for patent and marketing of an integrated membrane protein prediction and analysis for commercialisation purposes.
  4. I obtained an EPSRC grant for a research entitled: A fuzzy approach to video transmission over Bluetooth. The overall aim of the project is concerned with transmission of digital video signal over Bluetooth wireless using intelligent systems techniques (fuzzy logic, neural networks and genetic algorithms).
  5. I was awarded Emerald pre-commercialisation fund for a research entitled: A prototype for real-time video transmission over Bluetooth wireless using intelligent systems. The overall aim of the project is concerned with building a working model for real-time transmission of digital video over wireless providing image quality for commercialisation purposes.
  6. I obtained the Royal Society research grant in the applications of intelligent systems to food engineering. This is a collaborate work between the Intelligent Systems Research Centre at London Metropolitan University and the Sugar Research Group at Instituto Superior Politecnico "Jose Antonio Echeverria" in Cuba.
  7. Knowledge Transfer Partnership: Acted as the academic support for a KTP project entitled: 'Self-Adaptive Intelligent Keyboard', EDPA.
  8. Knowledge Transfer Partnership: Acting as the academic support for a KTP project entitled: 'Development of software package for IT security and network protection for small businesses', LifelineIT Solutions Ltd.

Current research supervision

PhD student: Ms. Deepthi Ratnayake (de Silva) - started Jan 2009. Research area: An improved authentication model for IEEE 802.11-2007 to prevent Probe Request DoS Attacks.

PhD student: Alexander Charles John Callard - started Nov 2011. Research area: A framework for collaborative, cloud-based and computer assisted creation, analysis and certification of data.

PhD student: Chu-Ting Cheung - started June 2010. Research area: Service adaptation and context-aware applications in mobile computing middleware.

PhD rstudent: Mr. Iman Samizadeh - started Oct 2006. Research area: Multimedia applications over ZigBee based on the vision of Ambient Intelligence.

Postdoctoral research assistant: Dr. Adnan Yusuf is currently working on the applications of AI to membrane protein, started March 2010.

Editorial positions

I organised a special issue for 'Expert Systems, The International Journal of Knowledge Engineering and Neural Networks', entitled "Fuzzy Logic Applications". The special issue attracted 5 papers, which I selected and reviewed for publication. I wrote an editorial for the special issue, which was published in September 2002 issue, Vol. 19, No. 4.

I organised a themed issue for 'Expert Systems, The International Journal of Knowledge Engineering and Neural Networks', entitled "Fuzzy Control Systems". The themed issue consists of 4 papers, which I selected and reviewed for publication. I wrote an editorial for the themed issue, which was published in February 2002 issue, Vol. 19, No. 1.

I was a guest editor for 'Expert Systems, the International Journal of Knowledge Engineering and Neural Networks' for a year.

I am currently a member of the Editorial Board of ICTACT Journal of Soft Computing (IJSC).

I am currently a lead guest editing for a Special Issue of Advances in Fuzzy Systems for Hindawi Publishing Corporation.

  1. I had a keynote speech entitled 'An Intelligent Video Streaming Technique in Wireless Communications' in The Third International Forum on Applied Wearable Computing, IFAWC 2006, 15th-16th March 2006 at the Mobile Research Center in Bremen, Germany.
  2. I had a keynote speech at the opening of The 10th International Conference on Intelligent Engineering Systems - INES entitled 'Intelligent Systems Applications' in June/July 2006, at London Metropolitan University, UK.
  3. I presented an invited lecture for International Neural Networks Society Special Interest Group Workshop on 25th Nov 10 at London Metropolitan University. The paper was entitled, 'Applications of AI to transmembrane protein prediction and analysis'.

I organised an invited session in "Computational Intelligence" for two international conferences which took place simultaneously in Orlando, USA, entitled: "the 4th world multi-conference on Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics SCI'2000, and the 6th international conference on Information Systems, Analysis and Synthesis ISAS'2000". I attracted 5 papers to the session.
