Research
Dr Bal Virdee's research is in the area of microwave wireless communications encompassing 3G Mobile phones to satellite technology. He has supervised several PhD research students to completion and is currently supervising 5 PhDs. He has published over sixty peer reviewed papers, including 18 journal papers. He has also co-authored a book entitled Broadband Microwave Amplifiers, published by Artech House in Sept. 2004. In recognition of his research activities he has been invited on several occasions to chair sessions at international conferences. Experts have come to work with him on their sabbatical leave from e.g. Istanbul Technical University and Universidad Politécnica de Valencia. He is a peer-reviewer for prestige journals and international conferences, such as IET and IEEE among several others. He is in the Editorial Boards of Far East Journal of Electronics and Communications, and IAEng. He is also in the Program Committee & Conferences Co-Chair for The World Congress on Engineering. He is a Chartered Engineer (CEng), Fellow of the Institute of Electrical Engineers (FIET), and a Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (MIEEE). The Faculty’s Centre of Communications Technology is lead by him.
Research Interest
His research interest includes: reconfigurable devices, techniques to suppress spurii in filters for electromagnetic compatible (EMC) systems, photonic band-gap (PBG) miniaturisation, Novel microstrip resonators for frequency selective applications using fractals and metamaterial phenomena, efficient high-power RF amplifiers, ultra-broadband amplifiers, novel rf high power amplifier design technique for cellular base-stations, ultra-low noise tuneable reference oscillators with low phase noise, broad tuning low noise voltage controlled oscillators (VCO), efficient low-noise oscillators, linear broadband highly efficient power amplifiers, multimode filters, ultra-broadband frequency discriminating devices, low-profile miniature antennas, and UWB communications.
Biography
Dr Bal Virdee graduated with a BSc (Eng) Honours in Communication Engineering and MPhil from Leeds University, UK. He obtained his PhD from University of North London, UK. He was worked as an academic at Open University and Leeds University. Prior to this he was an R & D Electronic Engineer in the Future Products Dept. at Filtronic Components Ltd., Shipley, West Yorkshire, and at PYE TVT (Philips) in Cambridge. He’s has held numerous duties and responsibilities at the university, i.e.: Health & Safety Officer, Postgraduate Tutor, Examination’s Officer, Admission’s Tutor, Short Course Organiser, Course Leader for BSc Communications Systems and BSc Electronics. Currently, he is Course Leader for MSc/MEng Satellite Communications. In 2010 he became an Academic Leader (UG Recruitment). He is a member of ethical committee, member of faculty’s research committee, & research degrees committee.
External and Scholarly Activities
Since 2000 he has been Director of the London Metropolitan University Microwaves (LMUM), a third stream income generation activity. At LMUM he is involved with the design and developed the “Microstrip Trainer”, which provides an innovative approach to teaching and training of students, technicians and professional engineers in microwave circuits and systems. The Microstrip Trainer comprises microwave integrated circuit building blocks used in modern microwave radio, radar and satellite communications systems. Over the last decade this product has been manufactured solely within the Faculty, and is marketed by Feedback Instruments Ltd. His other industrial collaboration was to develop dielectric resonator stabilised oscillators to operate at X-band for Alpha Industries Ltd., USA. More recently, in collaboration with Filtronic Components Ltd., he was responsible for pioneering the development of state-of-the-art ultra-broadband amplifier that is employed in defence related equipment and radar systems. I was also instrumental in the development of a novel current sharing technique for RF/microwave amplifiers. Amplifiers are the biggest power consuming devices in wireless communications systems. The technique allows consumption of power to be drastically reduced without compromising the amplifier’s performance. Hence, it prolongs battery life of wireless communications handheld devices. He has also development and run CPD courses in response to the demand made by industry. In particular, specialist five-day short courses in: Microwave Components & Devices; Microwave Communications Systems; Microwave Dielectric Resonator Oscillator Design; and Antennas & Measurement developed for PSION Computers. His other scholarly activities have included acting as a consultant reviewer for Prentice-Hall publishers in the areas of: Electromagnetic Engineering, Microwave Engineering, & Microprocessors-Based Engineering. He is also an external examiner at Leeds Metropolitan University.
