MSc Professional Engineering and Technology

New Entirely Work-based MSc Course in the Faculty of Computing

Who this course is for
The contemporary business in general and the software industry in particular currently experience high demand for a new breed of IT professionals, not only having the necessary knowledge and skills, but also capable of identifying, planning and managing the necessary steps to turn an IT solution into an efficient instrument for reaching the business objectives. In industry there are plenty of IT professionals who have certified after their first degree and technically are extremely proficient and although they lack the business and management knowledge and skills needed for their role, they are quite capable of obtaining them. Unfortunately, they are typically working in positions which do not allow them to be absent for long from work and for them the work-based course would give an opportunity to learn quickly without being absent from work. The new, completely work-based MSc course "Professional Engineering and Technology", is for these specialists. The course can boost their career with the postgraduate degree they can obtain without leaving their work, which is highly attractive for many busy professionals.

When to start and how long it will take
The course starts after the official enrolment with negotiations about the programme of study, which can be initiated at any time. The whole course takes from one to six years to complete and can be studied part-time without interrupting your current employment (typical programme of study requires 2-3 years).

What the study programme includes
The course includes a wide range of flexible options, which allow students to combine their prior experience and to continue working on their current business tasks as a part of their study.
  • Two modules build the technical foundations for professional engineering (Professional Technology Foundation, Technology and Engineering Solutions Management). They are meant to increase the level of professionalism in dealing with technology at work. Specialists with significant experience (i.e. Certified Developers, System Administrators and Chartered Engineers) can have these modules directly credited.
  • The second pair of modules are of a methodological nature (Research and Development Skills, Work-Based Learning and Professional Development). They target the personal and professional development of the students while working and studying.
  • The third group of modules is entirely practically-oriented and directly prepares the students for the dissertation project (Professional Portfolio and Project Management). Using material from their own work the students will seek problems and will plan solutions directly related to it.
  • The MSc Dissertation by Work-based Learning module, which finishes the course of study, summarizes and integrates the knowledge and skills gained during the study on a problem directly related to the student's work, and therefore it allows them to show to a fuller extent a new level of competence and confidence in their workplace.
How to schedule the study
The students must negotiate the specific programme of studies with the Course Organiser. The individual modules included may also involve negotiation with the Module Organiser for the corresponding module. The employers are directly involved most of the time since their support will be required both in the beginning of the course, when the programme of study is scheduled, as well as later on, while negotiating the content of each module.
