I am good at being a Receptionist.  I became good at it because I care about the humans in my community. I am the one who greets you with a smile regardless, her own problems.  I am  the one who directs you to the services of your needs.  I am the one who makes you leave the building with a satisfying feeling that my non-profit organization served you with your needs or directed you to the right sources.

Working with home computers.  I've spent years and years tinkering at home, reading a little in magazines or (more usefully) on the internet but trying out lots.  Sometimes I gt stuck and need to ask for help, but most of the time I simply work things out.

Teaching church classes:
1. I have a great desire to want to be a good teacher.
2. I read books on teaching methods, the psychology of learning, and ask a lot of questions of students as to how they accept my teaching style (most answers are general and who knows how truthful).
3. I always try new teaching tools and techniques.

I am good at declaiming. Since I was three years old I was appreciated by my parents that I can memorize and deliver by heart my first poem. From that time on, since gradeschool, I am always the class representative to declaim or to read pieces of literature for contest or to entertain people. I became good at it through constant practise and by really capturing the spirit or the right emotion for that piece. PRACTICE & CONTEXT & PASSION to deliver one's best.

I think I learn best when given a task that I will read up on, ask professional advice and then attempt. If I am apprehensive then I will break the task into smaller components and then proceed by completing each task in order. I find this rewarding and will tackle any such situations be it practical or theorectical using this same approach.

Using the computer - word processing, database, email, internet etc.

Self-taught. Many hours spent trying, failing, trying again. I know that the technology is logical and that the things I want to do are possible. I just keep at it until I get it right. Not perfect yet, but I find it a challenge and interesting.

Your question has me intrigued, so here are my thoughts, for what they're worth...

I'm good at teaching. I became good at it through:

  • ENVIRONMENT
    • being raised to value learning very highly
    • being interested from childhood in the workings of the human mind
    • being in school for many years, and doing fairly well most of the time
    • living in an environment that values academic learning (University community)
    • being surrounded by people at work and at home who care about education and learning too
  • MODELING
    • having inquisitive parents; being surrounded by materials for learning (books, science magazines, public television)
    • having a few inspiring teachers
  • TRAINING
    • when I entered graduate school, we were more or less required to teach from the very beginning. There was a 1-week intensive intro. to teaching writing, and then we had weekly meetings where we were told what to do after that. I learned on the job. It was terrifying and exhilerating - like jumping out of an airplane.
    • after that first year, we were given freedom to plan our own course. I threw myself into it with a passion (having disliked the approach I had been taught the first year).
  • A PASSION FOR THE SUBJECT
    • I discovered that I cared deeply that students get everything they could out of the college experience, and that they learn to think and communicate clearly.
    • I find nothing more exciting and fascinating than watching a person learn. And nothing is more dreary than a mind that has closed itself.
    • For me, a teaching is an ART. It is responsive and organic, a dialog between the students and the teacher.
  • EXPERIENCE
    • I've been teaching college now for 8 years. I still love it. I also teach very young children, and find that equally fascinating.
    • Obviously, since I care about my work so much (see above) I devote a fair amount of mental energy to it. I plan carefully; I know when I have a good class planned; I know how to change gears if things aren't going well; I learn from mistakes; I constantly explore new options.
  • APPROPRIATE SUPERVISION
    • I teach best when given a lot of freedom to "go where I need to go next." I teach differently every semester, and only go back to notes/files for inspiration, not to redo what I did last time.
  • READING
    • I read voraciously about teaching writing when I started. When I switched to teaching study skills, I read a great deal about that too. I don't have as much time to browse the libraries now, but I still enjoy it when I get the chance, and I still find useful ideas. In fact, it was the search for new ideas that brought me here! Thanks for giving me the opportunity to think this question through. Now I think I'll go explore some other areas!

I'd rather like to address what I see as my learning style and then, what I perceive myself as being good at. I learn most effectively and throughly when I am in control of my own learning and am actively engaged in it. I find that I need an intellectual base before experiential learning is most effective and then, to solidify my understanding, I must go back to the intellectual/academic base. I see myself as being particularly good as seeing connections between disperate ideas/topics. I like to make sense of things in a holistic way.

I became good at writing by:

  • reading widely
  • thinking about issues
  • listening intently to others

I think I am a very good supervisor. This has come from watching and learning from others about what to do as well as what not to do. I have also learned by receiving feedback from those I supervise. In addition I learned from attending workshops. Lastly, I learned from trial and error.
