| In 2006-7, Cuban writer, Pedro Pérez Sarduy, was a guest lecturer with the Caribbean Studies Centre, leading the undergraduate Cuba
module. He used his recent novel, The Maids of
Havana, as a prism to explore modern Cuban culture, politics and
history. He also lead The Greater
Caribbean
section of the introductory Caribbean Studies module.
Pedro was joined by British Academy Visiting Fellow, Dr Jorge Giovannetti (University of Puerto Rico), who spoke in both modules on his research on British West Indian migration to Cuba. Visiting lecturer, Camillia Cowling, and researcher Dr Jonathan Curry-Machado, also contributed to the Cuba module - speaking on their work on 19th century gender and slavery, and sugar and skilled labour migration to Cuba. |
