Employment Law and Practice (short course)
Why study this course?
This short course will enable you to critically analyse contemporary employment law issues, keep abreast of legal developments and appreciate the practical implications of employment law disputes. You'll gain an understanding of this complex area of law and of the importance of law and legal developments in the employment field.
The Employment Law and Practice course will provide you with an understanding of the legal framework relating to employee relations and human resource management, giving you the ability to handle and analyse legal materials with confidence. You'll be able to analyse developments in employment law, including European Community law, and be able to identify appropriate sources to enable you to keep abreast of developments.
You'll also be able to identify problems and issues that arise in employee relations and human resource management, and apply legal principles to those situations. Students learn to advise on appropriate legal action to be taken in the workplace, advise on the preparation, presentation and settling of employment tribunal cases, and identify current legal issues, research those areas and analyse the findings.
This short course is a fully validated academic module that is part of the master's (MA) and Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) courses in human resource management. Short course participants will take this module together with existing full-time or part-time students on the postgraduate courses.
Thie course is credit-bearing and you'll be issued a Certificate of Attendance setting out the credits you've achieved and the grade obtained. You can also be issued a transcript on completion of the course. The credits earned may be applied towards a full, related degree at London Metropolitan University, or another university, should you wish to pursue a full degree at a later stage.
The module is assessed through two components as follows:
- component one: individual employment law – case study paper (25%), and research and analysis paper (50%)
- component two: collective employment rights – essay (25%)
You'll need a good bachelor’s degree (2.2) in any subject or a three-year diploma in business that includes good grades in human resources (HR) subjects.
Those with a Higher National Diploma / Higher National Certificate, Certificate in Personnel Practice/Certified Treasury Personnel/Certified Human Resources Professional or equivalent Charted Institute of Personnel and Development qualification may be considered.
In exceptional circumstances, candidates with significant HR experience at a senior level may be considered.
Interviews are generally required for non-standard entry.
An International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of at least 6 is required.

- the contract of employment
- discrimination law
- termination of employment
- confidential information and intellectual property law
- health and safety at work
- collective labour law
- collective labour law 2
- the practical implications of employment law and appropriate organisational responses
This short course is an academic credit-bearing module validated as part of the Human Resources Management MA and PG Dip. Successful completion of these University awards and joining the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) enables students to gain associate membership of the CIPD and you can apply for professional upgrading with the Institute linked to your professional experience to achieve chartered membership or fellowship.
