Our QTS Only School Direct (Salaried) Secondary Mathematics (Cardinal Pole) course offers you the chance to be paid while you work towards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). London Met works within the Department for Education's (DfE's) School Direct framework to help find you salaried training positions.

Accredited by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL), the course has limited places and is only open for applications when schools have openings available. You should check availability with the University before applying in UCAS.

This is an exciting one-year course that leads to Qualified Teacher Status, providing you with the knowledge and skills required to teach 11 to 16-year-olds (Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3), with some training available to teach children older than 16-years-old.

Specialising in teaching within urban, multicultural and multilingual schools, you’ll addresses the challenges of language, diversity and equality across the curriculum. The course is taught within the context of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and the unique London school environment.

School placements are supported by school-based mentors and University-linked tutors. The tutors also deliver your university sessions, ensuring you have a continuity of support throughout the course.

We’ll help you develop your understanding of the primary school teacher role within the broad field of education. There will be opportunities to extend your knowledge, develop your classroom practice and examine the underlying principles and values that inform current debates around educational issues.

Assessment

You're assessed by a university-linked tutor during visits to your placement school and by your school-based mentor through regular assessments.

Professional accreditation

On successful completion of the course, the University will recommend you to the NCTL for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

You must also have passed the Department for Education’s professional skills tests prior to entry. This will be a condition of your offer, so it would be a good idea to make arrangements to take these tests at the same time as submitting your application.

At the interview, should you be invited to one, we will assess your understanding of current teaching practice and issues in schools. As our placements are based in London, you should be prepared to display an awareness of the multicultural context of teaching in urban schools. You may also be invited to interview based on the work experience information given in your application.

Full GCSEs is recommended for entry but we can also accept equivalents. If you're unable to confirm your holding of full GCSEs, then an internal test in maths or English may be taken if you have been offered a place. This is normally only available if your offer has been made very close to the course start date.

The University will assess any overseas qualifications for equivalence using a number of resources including our own internal guidelines, the UK National Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) and the Bursary Tables publicly available from the NCTL.

Due to statutory requirements, we are not able to offer sponsorship under the Tier 4 visa route for this course. We will be happy to consider those falling into this category for an alternative suitable course on request. Overseas nationals who already hold an alternative visa in a suitable category or have been granted permission to remain in the UK indefinitely and EU nationals may be considered for admission but please note that an additional international enhanced police check will be required.

As this is an employment-based route to QTS, you’ll be employed by your school and attend the University for a limited number of training days across the training year. There are no specific modules.

Your University-based work will involve a variety of learning activities, lectures and workshops to provide formal opportunities to extend your subject knowledge and explore the principles of effective teaching.

There will also be opportunities for you to reflect on and discuss your experiences in school, learn from other trainees and critically examine education policy and practices as well as national and local data.

Graduates of our QTS Only School Direct salaried secondary school courses have gone on to continue their careers as secondary school teachers in schools such as King’s Lynn Academy.

Our QTS courses are delivered by a small, dynamic team of lecturers who combine their subject knowledge in areas such as English, mathematics, modern foreign languages and science with recent and relevant school experience and a clear understanding of excellent classroom practice. This team is fully committed to supporting trainees in their goal to become a qualified teacher who is uniquely trained to meet the challenges in modern London schools.

London Met has School Direct partnerships with nearly 100 schools. This large body of schools has joined with us to build a cross-capital alliance, providing diverse contexts in which to train the new generation of London teachers.

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2018. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

All students will benefit from our move to one campus, which will allow us to develop state-of-the-art facilities, flexible teaching areas and stunning social spaces.

Please note, in addition to the tuition fee there may be additional costs for things like equipment, materials, printing, textbooks, trips or professional body fees.

Additionally, there may be other activities that are not formally part of your course and not required to complete your course, but which you may find helpful (for example, optional field trips). The costs of these are additional to your tuition fee and the fees set out above and will be notified when the activity is being arranged.

How to apply

If you are currently working in a school that would support you undertaking the salaried route to Qualified Teacher Status, it may be possible to bring it into one of our School Direct partnerships. You should contact the University in the first instance. We will advise if places are available or put your school in contact with the partnerships team within the University.

All applications must be made through UCAS Teacher Training (UTT). Use UTT's course search tool to find teacher training routes offered by London Met or our lead partner schools. Applications will continue to be considered while there are places still available. If you are offered a place it might be that you are asked to resubmit your application with a different provider of London Metropolitan University teacher training.

This allows us to maximise the chance to offer you a place within our core and lead school portfolio, regardless of which route you applied through.
