The Bycycler recycled-waste scheme

The recycling scheme has been running across the University since January; we would like to thank all staff for their help and understanding during the implementation process.
We are awaiting the quarterly figures for the recycling scheme, which will be posted on this page. We hope these will demonstrate the Universities commitment to sustainability.
Thank you for your assistance.

Recycling made easy

The Bycycler system makes recycling easy, maximising your recycling and minimising your effort.

Just separate your general waste into two main streams- dry recyclables and residue waste - and typically you will be able to recycle typically up to 80% of your office waste and so reduce your impact on the environment.

‘Dry recyclables’ include all types of paper (white, coloured, newspaper, magazines and books), cardboard, empty drinks cans, bottles and cartons, plastic and paper cups.

‘Residue waste’ includes food scraps, crisp bags, sweet wrappers and anything that has been contaminated with food residue.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) (currently unavailable, please direct any questions to Garry Abbott g.abbott@londonmet.ac.uk)

Making the Bycycler system work for you

The Bycycler range is easy to use, clearly branded and attractively designed, demonstrating your environmental commitment for all to see.

The internal office Bycycler system consists of colour-coded dry recyclable and residue waste containers and desktop receptacles, making it easy for you to recycle at source. Dry recyclables are collected in clear bags in silver containers and residue waste in black bags in blue containers

What happens to your waste?

Once collected, our preferred waste management sub-contractor will process your dry recyclables through the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), the ultimate Bycycler. The waste management sub-contractor has developed effective relationships with a large number of reliable materials re-processors who re-process the dry recyclables recovered through the MRF.

While the remaining residue waste will go to landfill, although the waste management sub-contractor is now committed to working with this University to minimise this, thus reducing our collective impact on the environment.

Environmentally-friendly products

Wherever possible, the waste management sub-contractor is committed to buying British sourced recyclable products or products from environmentally sustainable resources. With this in mind, all of the internal office Bycycler containers have at least a 20% recycled content.

What the future holds

Whilst we are permitted to dispose of small amounts of non-hazardous
waste (i.e. glass and used-batteries) in with the rest of our office
residue waste, plans are now in place to introduce material specific
recycled-waste stations within each of the Academic buildings, across
both of the campuses. Further details of which will be posted on the
Estates webpage shortly.
