Year 1: Introduction to History and Theory

The module introduces a wide-ranging survey of the history of architecture and interior architecture and design. Through lectures and seminars the module outlines the relationship between context, meaning and buildings and encourages students to think and respond critically and confidently to ideas about design and architecture.

The programme of study is in two parts:

Lectures
A course of 12 lectures in the History of Architecture & Interior Architecture and Design. The course covers a number of major civilisations beginning with prehistory and including Egypt, Greece, Rome and Byzantium. From the Middle Ages onward there is more detailed concentration on European developments but lectures are also devoted to such non-Western traditions as Islamic, Indian and Japanese.

Seminars
A course of 8 seminars that teach basic conceptual and writing skills. Seminars focus on the material of the lectures and include an exploration of basic conceptual and writing techniques. The course will include visits to buildings and exhibitions.
