Department of Architecture and Spatial Design
ASD offers a unique range of undergraduate courses which aim to develop a creative, practical and rigorous approach to the three areas of design for which the School is renowned; Architecture and Interior Architecture and Design.

The undergraduate school consists of International Foundation Programmes, the BA Architecture and Architectural Studies degree programmes, BA Interior Architecture and Design programme and the Extended Degree In Architecture and Interior Design. All degree programmes are offered in full-tme and part-time mode. The International Foundation Programmes are full-time only.

In the 1st year of the undergraduate programmes, students are taught together. Work in this level is centered upon the design studio with a wide range of complementary courses (history & theory, structures, visual thinking, etc) which develop students' spatial, creative and technical skills and encourage the intelligent expression of ideas. Two field trips, one in London and the other to a major European city, form an important part of the course.

Upon successful completion of the International Foundation Programme, students would have created a portfolio of work to enable them to futher their studies in architecture, interior architecture or design. On completion of Level zero of the extended degree students will then progress to the Preliminary Level programmes which is the equivilant to the 1st year of the degree and will choose the route they wish to take to complete their degree: BA Hons Architecture, BA Hons Interior Architecture and Design or BA Hons Architectural Studies.

Students studying the 3 year degree programmes are progressed into 2nd Year in their respective degree programmes (BA (Hons) Architecture, BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design or BA (Hons) Architectural Studies) on successful completion of their 1st year or Preliminary Level programmes.
At the start of 2nd Year, students elect to join one of up to eight design studios, in which they remain for the rest of the year. These are 'vertical' design studios in which 2nd and 3rd Year students are taught together. At present, there are 7 undergraduate architecture design studios and 3 interior design studios. At the start of the year, each design studio presents a clear architectural or interior design position: this allows students to choose from a wide range of issues, methods of working and different types of projects. As in Preliminary Level, a wide range of complementary courses places the design investigation in a thorough academic framework and allows students to broaden their specialist knowledge and interests base.

In 3rd Year, students are again given the option to select a design studio and they are expected to develop their architectural or design projects to the highest level of resolution, in design and intellectual terms. A history & theory dissertation, technical studies dissertation and environmental audit of the design project is a requisite for successful completion of the BA Architecture or BA Interior Design degrees. As in previous years, a major field trip is an important and exciting component of the year.
