A Contemporary Theatre

The unit will be considering the role of theatre in our day-to-day social
encounters and the corresponding role of purpose built theatres in the
contemporary city. We will begin the year by reading plays, attending
performances, surveying stages and designing sets. The question of what is
specifically required of theatre spaces and therefore what determines the
building type will subsequently be addressed. We will progress to a
discussion regarding the relationship of architectural styles to building
types.

In January we will visit La Scala in Milan and Palladio’s Teatro Olimpico in
Vicenza. Throughout the year there will be regular workshops with theatre
professionals including a theatre director acting client.

As before, the unit encourages playful exploration of form and programme.

The process is intended to be speculative and the outcome unexpected.
