Applied Technology in Architecture
Applied Technology in Architecture is a core module concerned with making buildings.

The module is delivered as a lecture series interlaced with presentations, workshops and factory visits. We invite external consultants who will lecture and contribute their expertise to the development of your design.

The module consists of three components:

In the first component students are asked to develop a building and accommodate a set of physical, thermal or financial restraints. You will generate a set of working drawings and architectural details to display your understanding of the subject matter. You will calculate thermal performances, construction costs, and produce a construction sequence.

This years first task is set by Alun Jones of Dow Jones Architects. We will explore the design of a small gasification plant in a dense urban situation. The work will concentrate on the relationship between programme, form and cladding, and how this is situated within the urban context.

We are particularly interested in the representational potential of this building both as a building type and as a piece of the urban landscape. Ornament and cladding, materiality and place emerge at the forefront of concerns.

The second component is a logbook based on your experiences and constructions on a long weekend at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth. The Centre is based in a decommissioned slate quarry and promotes the use of alternative energies and building techniques.

The third component, running in semester B, is Prototyping Architecture. This component is designed to support and inform your studio work. You will develop an architectural detail or a component of your studio design and build a 1:1 model to test the feasibility of your design.
