The name of Jewry Street derives from the Jewish community who resettled just inside the city gate after almost four centuries of expulsion from England as a result of the crusades. Following the petitioning for settlement in England in 1656, Jews built synagogues a little to the north of Jewry Street in Creechurch Lane, Duke's Place and Bevis Marks. Only Bevis Marks survives.
