Commercial Road, a main artery to and from the City, was originally built as a toll road by the Commercial Road Company in 1804 to improve transport links to the newly opened East & West India Docks (i.e. the Docklands). 41 Commercial Road was built for the Norwich Union Insurance Company in the late 1960s, and was adapted for the London College of Furniture (a precursor to London Met) in 1970, later becoming the University in 1990.
